(Atlantic) Nishna Valley Family YMCA Executive Director Dan Haynes told the local media this morning that the YMCA’s computer systems recently were infected by a computer virus that targeted their financial transactions systems.
“The Nishna Valley YMCA sustained losses under $50,000 and due to banking regulation some of those funds may be frozen and may eventually be recovered in the future.”
“It does not appear that the virus went after our members’ personal financial information, but it’s possible that this information was compromised. We have sent a letter to all members who do automatic payment processing with us to notify them of the situation. Those members on an annual payment plan or those who do payroll deduction have not been affected.”
“The YMCA’s computer security systems are of the highest quality, but this virus is virtually undetectable by antivirus software and firewall technology. We are fully supporting the investigation being conducted by the FBI, Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation and Atlantic Police Department. Questions about the virus and the investigation should be directed to them.
“This is the first time the Nishna Valley Family YMCA has experienced something like this, and we are working with technology experts and local bank officials to make sure it never happens again. Going forward all our ACH transactions will be handled inside the actual banking facility until the FBI is able to give us a report on the exact details. Members with questions or concerns can contact me at 712-243-3934.”
“The very nature of viral and malware attacks dictate that protection can only be reactive, in other words, a virus must first exist before protection software companies can develop a code to detect and/or eliminate the threat. With this particular type of viral infection, the virus morphs or changes so frequently that the Anti-Virus companies cannot keep up with it.” Jim Burnette HTS
“These attacks are perpetrated by professional cyber criminals who possess some of the brightest IT minds in the world. Their goal is to victimize as many people as they can.” Jim Burnette HTS
