(Storm Lake) The Storm Lake Community has an official hero living among them. Buena Vista Sheriff Gary Launderville, was selected as one of two citizen heroes at the inaugural 2011 Hy Vee Heroes game held in Nebraska on Friday.
Launderville, with his wife Kathy, raised six children, adopted seven others, and fostered 125 more children over the years.
Launderville was also hit by an S-U-V last January as he tried to rescue a mother and child in a snowstorm.
There were over 200 citizen hero nominations from the state of Iowa. The
Red Cross received a $100,000 donation from Hy Vee before the game and will continue to raise money through the 90999 text campaign.
