(Greenfield) An Adair County man being held on drug charges escaped from the Adair County Jail Sunday.
According to the Adair County Sheriff's Office, at around 12:47 p.m., Adair County's three inmates were allowed out of their cell to shower and excercise. An inmate's ability to exercise is mandated by the Iowa Adminstrative Code. While in the chain link fenced-in exercise area attached to the south side the of Adair County Jail, Thomas Lee Caldwell climbed the chain link fence and was somehow able to make his way through the twelve foot high "ceiling" portion of the fence. Caldwell fled the area on foot before stealing a 1991 Chevrolet pickup that was parked in the 200 block of East Iowa Street in Greenfield.
Caldwell was taken back into custody approximately 74-minutes later near his residence in the 1800 block of Sheldon Avenue in rural Adair County. The stolen Chevrolet pickup was also located near Caldwell's residence in a wooded area.
