(Atlantic) It was a scary ride for a construction worker in Atlantic this (Tuesday) afternoon. Atlantic Police Officer Matthew Staiert says a heavy piece of equipment owned by Western Engineering stalled while traveling up the hill on 10th Street near the Cass County Community Center.
"The machine started to roll backwards at which time the driver tried to apply the brakes but nothing was working. The machine continued to roll backwards eastbound on tenth," stated Staiert. "The driver, fearing for his safety, jumped off the machine, while his fellow employees helped get people and vehicles out of the way. The machine proceeded past Whetstone Car Wash and struck a parked Suburban and ran over a light pole before coming to rest in the ditch at Highway 6 and 10th Street.
Officer Staiert says the damage to the parked vehicle is estimated at around $5,000.00. The machine received an estimated $5,000.00 damage, and the light pole sustained $2,000.00 damage.
Officer Stairet says the driver, whose name was not released, escaped injury. No one else was hurt during the mishap.
