(ELK HORN) The Elk Horn-Kimballton School Board approved requesting allowable growth and supplemental aid for the negative special education balance from 2010-2011 at their school board meeting last night.
Superintendent Dean Schnoes says every year school districts get a certain amount of money from the State government for students that are in special needs and when schools do their budgets things can change through the year as far as other expenses that might incur because of different programs and things.
“So, in a situation like we had last year, we had a lot more expenses for like traveling, for other curriculum, for outside agencies, and we ended up over spending the special needs budget,” explained Schnoes. “So when that happens, then what you can do, you can pass through board approval a recommendation to ask for modified allowable growth to pay back the added-on expenses that you had in the special needs program from the year before.”
Schnoes says they got Board approval to request that the funds that were overspent in the special needs department be allowed to be recouped to the Elk Horn-Kimballton School District.
In other news, the Exira School Board will hold a special meeting tonight in the Middle School Commons. The meeting will include a closed session to discuss a personnel issue. Superintendent Dean Schnoes says he could not elaborate on the meeting details since the meeting discusses personnel.
