(COUNCIL BLUFFS) A Council Bluffs Day Care provider was arrested this morning for Neglect of a Dependent Person and Child Endangerment.
The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office arrested 37-year-old Teresa Chapin, operator of Teresa’s Tiny Tots Day Care. Chapin had primary care and custody of 5 month old Lane Thomas.
On August 17th, the Sheriff’s Office was called to 133 Rosebud Lane at around 4:15 p.m. for an infant that was not breathing. The infant, Lane Thomas, was transported to Jennie Edmundson Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Through investigation it was found that Lane Thomas was put down in an adult bed for a nap at 2:30 p.m. after he had been fed his formula. Teresa’s daughter checked on Lane at 3:20 p.m., but did not verify that he was breathing. At approximately 4:00 p.m., the daughter went to the bedroom to get Lane up from his nap and found him laying face down, cold to the touch and unresponsive. Teresa began CPR and 911 was called.
An autopsy conducted on Lane Thomas at the State Medical Examiner’s Office indicated that the manner of death was undetermined and the cause of death was sudden unexplained infant death.
The Sheriff’s Office says the evidence at the day care would indicate that Teresa Thomas displayed a level of negligence that contributed to the death of Lane Thomas. Teresa is a licensed day care provider in the state of Iowa and has experience and education about child development needs. A provider should have been aware of the hazards of excessive bedding for an infant the age of Lane Thomas.
