(Council Bluffs) Heavy rain closed some streets in Omaha and Council Bluffs this morning. Motorists were urged to avoid the north downtown area.
Some streets near TD Ameritrade Park were closed due to heavy rain, including 10th Street and Cuming Street.
In Council Bluffs, high water shut down one lane of westbound Interstate 80 west of south 24th Street.
News Sources say an Iowa National Guard transport truck was dispatched to rescue around 30 children from their stranded school bus in the Bluffs. The bus had stalled in about 4 feet of water south of downtown near 30th and Atlantic Avenue. The children soon were loaded into the truck and taken to safety. No injuries were reported.
The American Red Cross opened a shelter in the Bluffs at 8 a.m. to help people who had to evacuate from their homes due to the flash flooding. The shelter will be at the Community of Christ of Church, 140 W. Kanesville Blvd . Meals and minor first aid will be offered.
The Omaha area, including Douglas, Sarpy and Pottawattamie Counties, was under a flash flood warning until 7:30 a.m. due to the 2-4.5 inches of rain dumped on parts of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.
Power outages elsewhere caused the closing of three school districts; Nishna Valley, East Mills Public Schools and the Malvern School District.
