(Red Oak) The Red Oak City Pool is going to undergo a major facelift. The Red Oak City Council vote unanimously this week to authorize City Administrator Brad Wright to seek bids to repair the pool. This decision comes after the Park and Tree Board recommended that the current pool be fixed, instead of attempting to build a new one.
“The Park and Tree Board and the City Council at this point have agreed that we just don’t believe it’s the right time to approach a referendum with the public to build a new pool,” said Wright. “We’ve had ranges of five to six million dollars for a new pool, we just don’t feel it’s appropriate to try to do that right now, that’s why we’re looking at spending some dollars on the existing pool and trying to update it and keep it going for a few more years.”
Wright says this is a considerable project starting with the pool floors and walls.
“The bottom of our pool, the walls of the pool have gotten extremely pitted, very rough and has some sharp edges,” said Wright. “This is something that has showing itself for the past four or five years but has really gotten worse in the last year or so. So we will be going out for bids to have somebody come in and resurface the pool area.”
Wright says they are required to make the pool ADA accessible and they plan on adding some other amenities to the facility.
“We are also required to make the pool handicap accessible, we’re required to have that done before next season, so we will be doing that as part of this project and we’re also looking at making some other improvements; possibly replacing the slide that we have, looking at some new slides and things to make it more attractive to customers and the public to want to come to the pool,” said Wright.
The City Council is authorizing one bid for the floor and walls 1-inch around the perimeter of the pool and ADA accessibility, with an alternate bid for adding amenities to the pool. The council is authorizing a second bid for repairs to the brick work of the concession stand and bathhouse building and concrete deck replacement in areas where needed.
