(Atlantic) Atlantic School District students head back to school tomorrow morning. One big change for the students will be a longer school day. Atlantic High School Principal Heather McKay says they have changed to an 8-period day for several reasons.
“One of those factors is that all students are now required to be involved in a physical education course whether it is P.E., weight training or a life-time fitness course,” said McKay. She says another reason for the extended day is the changing graduation requirements. “Through 2015 the students are to satisfy literacy requirements in finances, 21sttechnology, and health. All of the different categories are to prepare our students for life after high school.”
McKay says, “Several elective courses would have been harmed if the district had not extended the day.”
Students will start class at 8:00 a.m., and will be dismissed at 3:19 p.m.
