(Atlantic) Ray “Bubba” Sorensen, the man who created The Freedom Rock, is scheduled to speak in Atlantic on Sunday, November 17.
Ray “Bubba” Sorensen, from Greenfield, is known throughout the world as the creator of The Freedom Rock®. He is also the Iowa House Representative for District 20 which includes Adair, Guthrie and parts of Cass and Dallas Counties.
Sorensen at the age 19 started designing and painting a 12-foot tall boulder north of Greenfield. He continues to repaint that rock every year since 1999 to be finished before Memorial Day. He has nearly completed a commissioned rock in every Iowa County and some in other states.
Bubba’s goal is to spread a message of thanking veterans. Every county’s rock is unique, representing specific stories. Each one is part of the overall story of Iowa and their veterans’ service. Recently Bubba has applied his artistic skills in another way by illustrating a book of poems honoring veterans.
Sorensen will appear to speak at the American Legion Memorial Building, (Old Armory), at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 17. There is no fee for attending, but donations are appreciated. For more information, see ariseAtlantic.org website or Facebook.
The Atlantic History Center, Military Museum, and Military Library will be open for viewing. Those people interested may check out books from the Library. Refreshments will be available.
